About Mike’s List

I’ve been publishing Mike’s List for more than 20 years.

Before podcasts. Before blogs. Before social networking. We had newsletters.

Back in the 1990s, I edited a computer magazine called WINDOWS Magazine. (You can still buy some issues on eBay, apparently.) In that role I got a front-row seat to the PC revolution and the emergence and rise of the web in the 1990s. And that brought me into contact with some hilarious facts, products, people and ideas. And so I started a newsletter to promote the magazine itself. But it evolved to cover content that was too good to ignore, but not acceptable for a magazine with a mission of being actually useful. I called it the WinLetter.

When I left the magazine in 1999, I missed doing the newsletter. But "WinLetter" was the property of WinMag's publisher, CMP. So I launched my own new newsletter, which I called Mike's List.

The Wayback machine still holds old back issues, and, if you check the bottom, even links to the WinLetter going all the way back to the beginning. (Newer back issues are here.)

Over the years, Mike's List has evolved. I shut it down for a while, then brought it back. Mike's List has changed and evolved. But at it's core, the newsletter is about ideas that people really shouldn't realize, but are able to bring into reality because of new technologies available to us all.

So I hope you continue to enjoy Mike's List for the next 20 years. It's been the great joy of my publishing career to bring you these crazy stories from the lunatic fringe of technology.
